Elephant Seal Viewing Calendar

November:Males start coming ashore
December:Males continue to arrive. Pregnant females start coming in. First pups born around Christmas.
January:Most births occur the second half of the month. Pups are nursing. Males and females breed. First females to arrive begin leaving the rookery.
February:Most mating occurs mid-month. Females depart.
March:Pups are weaned; most adults are gone. Weaners learn to swim.
April:Weaners are still on the beach. Females and juveniles come ashore to molt. Most weaners leave for their first migration by the end of the month.
May:Females and juveniles molt.
June:Subadult males come in to molt.
July:Subadult and adult males molt.
August:The last of the males molt.
September-
November:
Juveniles haul out to rest.
